Girls on the Run of San Antonio serves Bexar, Comal, and Kendall counties and inspires girls in 3rd – 8th grade to be joyful, healthy and confident. The program is an experiential based learning curriculum that uses running as a tool to reinforce the lessons. By setting a goal and working to achieve it, the girls learn that there is no limit to their potential.
The teams meet two times a week for 90 minutes over a 10 week period in both the fall and spring semesters. Through the course of the materials, the girls cover the following topics
- All About Me – girls begin to explore who they are and what they stand for
- Team Building – girls begin to understand the importance of cooperation
- Community Impact – as a team the girls design and execute a community service impact project
At the end of the 10-week curriculum the girls across the three counties come together for a 5K, where they are supported by their coaches, teammates, and families to complete the 3.1 miles. It’s in this moment that all of the lessons come together and the girls realize their potential.
I’ve had the privilege of working with the Girls on the Run community for several years now and have volunteered in many capacities, but coaching is by far one of my most treasured experiences.
